My mother recently went to see ‘The Recruiting Officer’ in the theatre but sadly I could not attend. Luckily, the theatre made a recording of the play for all those who did not have the chance to see it before it left London. Being a three hour play, it must have filled up the camera’s sdhc card or if not, almost filled it up!
The Recruiting Officer is a play by Irish writer George Farquhar, a 1706 play which follows the sexual and social exploits of two officers of the Queen’s army. One officer is the womanising Plume and the other is the rather cowardly Brazen. The two officers have been sent to the town of Shrewsbury to recruit soldiers and the play centres on their activities in Shrewsbury. A true Restoration comedy, it is an absolutely hilarious play, a true gem by George Farquhar. The play begins with Captain’s Plume’s Sergeant, a certain Sergeant Kite, recruiting in Shrewsbury. Captain Plume arrives shortly after this first scene and is closely followed by a local gentleman named Worthy. Plume is in love with Sylvia and Worthy is in love with Sylvia’s cousin Melinda.
